The Artist Plus Four Faces

In Art History, our prof let us watch a movie. It was “The Artist” against “Mona Lisa Smile” and the former, thankfully, won. I knew about the movie and I expected it to be in black and white and to be a silent one. I was a little surprised that my blockmates weren’t familiar with it. They didn’t even know it won an award and that it came out recently. But then some people just aren’t in to movies. Most of them got bored in the middle and though some parts of it were a little dragging, I certainly enjoyed watching it. Though I’ve watched many black and white films, I’ve never watched a silent one. I suppose that’s what the movie is trying to tell us, that even silent movies can be as much fun as ‘talkies’.

It’s the ending that gets to me. For a long time, George Valentin struggles with trying to keep talkies from taking over the cinema but fails due to Peppy Miller’s rise to success. Valentin eventually gives in and allows Miller to have him as the co-actor in the talkie “Sparkle of Love”. Now while Valentin looked pretty happy in the end, I felt a little depressed by what I saw. Valentin was a very passionate artist and a good one, too, but even though his acting skills were great he still had to give in to the new form. The movie tells the truth that all artists have to sell out at some point if you want to be a success. Not just artists, though. Everyone has to sell out. And many people will deny it. Sometimes you might not even be aware that you sold your a part of your soul for a quick buck. But it still happens in  the end.

Now, quite unrelated to the above, here are four drawings of people I didn’t expect to draw.

Cassie from Skins Season One and Two

Another Max from “Where the Wild Things Are”

De Niro as Travis from “Taxi Driver”. Supposed to watercolor him but my paint is missing.

Jarvis Cocker from one of my favorite bands, Pulp

Fan Art

With all the studio work, I couldn’t draw any of the usual portraits so I settled for fan art. Mostly A Song of Ice and Fire (as usual).

A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE/GAME OF THRONES

Aegon Targaren. I don’t know why but he’s all I draw these days. It’s the blue hair. I like boys with blue hair.

Toddler Aegon and Jon Connington.

W.I.P of Isaac as Bran Stark in the series.

TWO I DREW FOR A FRIEND

Okay, I don’t really watch this show. But I like how weird it is.

Quick and scratchy and done during Communication Arts. Sorry, sir.

No Drawing

Just to be clear, it’s homework, not homeworks. I just can’t stand it when my classmates say ‘homeworks’ and ‘stuffs’. It’s really annoying but I can’t correct them without embarrassing them so I keep quiet… Anyway, no drawing for today because someone stole my water color and I can’t paint my loose line drawings. Homework for Art History: What is art for you? I have trouble answering that. What is art for me??? I’ve never really thought about it. My prof says there is no such thing as art for art’s sake. Someone please argue or defend her. I kind of believe the opposite of what she says.

I should really get back to reading those lectures.

Weekend Drawings

College is boring. It’s not really a surprise, considering the fact that we only have one subject per day because our Euthenics and Communication Arts professors are always absent. We’ve already met our Theology teacher, Sir Rembrandt (yeah, cool name!), who’s pretty nice, though he’s not going to be my favorite. I was born a Catholic but our family doesn’t practice. My eldest sister is kind of an atheist and like my other sister, I believe that there are many gods.

Okay, enough about religion. Our prof in Materials 101 is okay. I’m excited to enter her class again because she’ll teach us to make wire sculptures which I’ve tried only once. I cut myself several times in my first attempt but I got to make my giant crab (weird, huh?). Our Art History prof is also a woman but younger and a movie fanatic like myself. I am tempted to ask her if she’ll let us watch A Clockwork Orange in her class. Then there’s our Professor Cabrera in Techniques and Visual Perception. He’s an old man who always wears these bowler hats and makes stupid jokes. I really like that old man. You can tell he’s smart and he allows us to swear in our class. Our school is Benedictine and naturally strict, which is why I’m planning to move to another school next year.

Okay, enough. This post is getting too boring. Anyway, Cabrera requires us to have a great number of things for his class, one of which is the kneaded eraser. I used to have one but…I’m really careless. So when I got a hold of it I drew nonstop for days. My first work with that magical, malleable thing is this wolf down here.

And my dad bought me a new not-cheap-at-all pen. He doesn’t buy me expensive ones because I always lose them. I immediately drew Sid Vicious the moment I uncapped it. The pen will die the next time I draw something like this. So much for pricey pens.

Theon and Arya

Two quick drawings of Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy and Maisie Williams as Arya Stark. I’m doing the whole cast. Jon just needs shading and Robb’s outline is already marked on the page. I actually want to skip ahead and draw Tyrion because he’ll be challenging, but I’m following a list. After Robb comes the rest of the Starks. If your’e asking why I drew Theon first it’s because Alfie looks a lot like Malcolm Mcdowell and I had trouble drawing him when I did my Clockwork Orange sketch.
